Traditional Linseed Finishes

Ottosson linseed oil paint, brushes, and finishing materials on a restoration workshop bench.

Traditional linseed oil paint can be a thoughtful choice for suitable woodwork, especially when preserving the character of an older building. Our work with Ottosson linseed paints combines traditional materials with careful application and a practical plan for future maintenance.

Restored red wood window and trim against traditional clapboard siding.

Historic New Castle, Delaware. We restored the existing wood sashes and shutters, repaired the surrounding casing and sills, and coordinated custom storm windows with Iconic Windows. The project preserves the character of the original openings while bringing the window assemblies back into service.

Custom red Ottosson linseed oil paint on restored wood window and shutters in New Castle, Delaware.

A custom color in traditional linseed paint. For the New Castle project, we mixed Ottosson colors to match an existing Benjamin Moore color. The paint was supplied by Earth+Flax. The resulting red finish ties the restored windows and shutters together while retaining the texture and detail of the woodwork.

Details that complete the restoration. Rob fabricated custom copper drip caps and fitted salvaged shutter hardware. These practical details complement the painted finish and help the restored windows and shutters work as a complete assembly.
